The History of Keno

Keno is a lottery based casino game that is similar in many ways to Bingo. What many people don't know is that Keno has a long history that dates back to ancient China, where the earliest Keno games played were actually strikingly similar to the ones played today.

The History

Keno, though not one of the most well-known casino games, is actually one of the oldest. Historians believe the game was created in the second century B.C. by a member of the Han Dynasty named Cheun Leung. China was at war, and Cheun Leung's forces were running short on supplies, so he created a version of Keno as a way to acquire funding for the war. In this story, Cheun Leung and his army might be considered the casino, while his citizens were the Keno players buying tickets.

Modern Rules of Play

Today, the rules of Keno are somewhat different than those developed by Cheun Leung, but the fundamentals are the same. Players purchase a Keno ticket and select at least ten random numbers on the card, and then turn in their card to the croupier in the Keno lounge. Then a series of numbers are selected randomly, and if you have enough matching numbers on your ticket, you can collect your winnings.

Keno can be played in a traditional casino, typically in a lounge dedicated to the game, or it can be played online as casinos such as Jackpot City Casino. The betting thresholds of Keno vary by casino, with some games offering starting bids of mere pennies while others require several dollars.
